New and revised apprenticeship qualifications

As you may be aware, the apprenticeship qualifications for the furnishings industry have been reviewed over the past year and now we are at the final stage of the process which is the endorsement. The Food, Fibre and Timber Industry has worked with WAFMA to keep everyone across the changes though emails, phone calls and presentations at meetings to give opportunities for comment.

The industry feedback that has been received, has been forwarded to the national body overseeing the review - IBSA see the project link here: Cabinet Making and Pathways - IBSA - Innovation & Business Skills Australia.

Key changes

  • The name i.e. Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology

  • The Certificate III Cabinet Making and Timber Technology is a merge of the previous THREE separate qualifications – Certificate III Cabinet Making, Certificate III Timber and Composites Machining and Certificate III in Furniture Making

  • There are now SIX streams/specialisations in the Certificate III Cabinet Making and Timber Technology (please note that not all the TAFE’s will be able to deliver all the streams):

- Furniture

- Kitchens and Bathrooms

- Marine Cabinetry

- Wood Machining

- Coopering

- Drafting

  • The White Card is now an entry requirement for the Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology

  • The Certificate III Upholstery includes more robust specific performance evidence to ensure graduates have traditional trade skills, as well as skills in modern techniques and technologies. Small business skills units have been added to electives.

From here, Janine Blake of FFTITC is required to complete a form that says WA industry endorses these new qualifications. The TAFE’s and training providers are given a year to finish anyone on the old qualifications (this is called a “teach out period”) at which time the new qualifications will come into effect.

If you have any questions, please contact Janine on 08 9361 2800, mobile 0427 351 027 or email janine@fftitc.com.au
